Facts

Manual handling is one hazard that arises in the majority of workplaces. It occurs in numerous activities and is indentified as a problem across most industry sectors.

Every year in New South Wales, approximately 17,000 people are seriously injured or suffer from illness related to manual handling.

This represents about 37 per cent of all injuries in NSW and costs NSW workplaces $373 million with an average cost of $22,000 per injury. When the hidden costs of injury are considered that figure is more than $1,491 million.

Manual handling needs to be considered as part of the overall management of OHS in your workplace. During manual handling training your employees are assessed on correct manual handling principles including squat, lifting, pushing techniques, lumbo-pelvic stability and general posture and movement patterns.

Actevate’s qualified assessors are then able to identify abnormalities that could place the individual at risk of injury. On-the-spot training is then provided with an aim to improve the employee’s work-related functional techniques. The prospective employee will also be educated on the general anatomy of the spine, postural imbalances and how the spine reacts to incorrect lifting techniques. A follow-up report reinforces the training protocol and specific recommendations.

Manual Handling Training will be tailored to your company's specific tasks and needs, and is generally divided into three sections:

  • thorough onsite task analysis (including photographs) to identify particular areas that need to be addressed; this allows our consultant to tailor our manual handling training to your specific tasks;
  • interactive injury prevention workshop: groups of 12-15 employees, mix of classroom style and practical elements: and
  • follow up session and program monitoring.
